The Task:

The Engineering Services industry is going through dramatic changes. Part of this change is the acquisition of many smaller, specialized engineering firms by major players such as AMEC and the subsequent consolidation of the industry. AMEC offers a wide variety of services across diverse industries. A common culture that is characterized by performance and delivery are critical to the achievement of the vision.

In order to support both the organic growth as well as the growth through acquisition AMEC decided to develop and implement the Executive Development Program (EDP). 

The Solution:

Coverdale custom-designed a 12-months program that consists of four five-day long modules and that is targeted at high potentials that are expected to become senior managers within 5 years. Senior AMEC management is closely involved in the program: From a kick-off dinner opened by senior management speakers to the mentoring of a live project that runs throughout the duration of the 12-months program. The modules are based on Coverdale's Inductive Learning Model.

The four modules cover a structured approach to delivering goals, developing self awareness and leadership skills, strategic thinking skills, developing commercial awareness, emotional intelligence as well as raising energy and a drive for results.

The Outcome:

Over 50% of previous participants now hold senior management positions. Many of AMEC's core business processes, such as its Strategic Relationship Management; Risk Management and Knowledge Management methodologies have been developed and embedded company-wide as a direct result of projects initiated during the Executive Development Program.

Steve Walden has co-developed and delivered the program as an AMEC in-house coach and course director together with Coverdale.
